6 money-saving tips for your next adventure

Travel offers so many things to so many people, and it is important to get the best possible adventure. However, this is often means that you need to be able to make the experience as cost-effective as possible. Travel can be expensive, and you don’t want the worry of cost affecting your enjoyment of the trip. So, check out these 6 brilliant money-saving tips that can help keep costs down on your next adventure.

  1. Self-catering

A lot of people love to be able to travel and not have to worry about meals. This is understandable, but it is also going to cost you more money. Self-catering is one smart way to cut down on the price of the trip. The major plus of self-catering is that you can cook your own meals most days, with plenty of great inspiration, and you have the flexibility of going out one day if you want to.

  1. Haggle

Another thing that a lot of tourists don’t actually take the time to do, but that can save you a lot of money, is haggling. Now, I find this works best when you are visiting marketplaces abroad because haggling is tradition here! Check out my guide for getting the best possible price at night markets and bazaars in tourist areas. These outdoor markets are often found in countries like Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco, and this is a great way of saving money.

  1. Try to avoid taking your card

So much of the time, we wind up spending more money than we plan on our travels, and this is often because we take out credit or debit cards with us. This can be a problem because the temptation is there to take more money out. Just try to budget for each day, and only take with you the cash you need. This way you are likely to be more frugal and make your money go further on a daily basis.

  1. Book off-peak

There are a lot of things you can do to help reduce costs, and booking off-season is one of the best. It’s always surprising how much can be saved by booking off-season instead of on peak, and this is certainly something to consider. CNN recommends making the most of off season travel by heading to a summer place, like Florence, in the winter, and a winter place, such as Finland, in the summer. This is a pretty good philosophy to have when it comes to saving on travel – and you get to beat the tourist queues!

      5. Go Local

It’s also a good idea to try and look at going local as much as possible. This is a really important part of having a fulfilling cultural experience that can also save you money. At the end of the day, tourist traps are going to wind up being significantly more expensive than local places. Try to use local tour guides, and visit local restaurants to eat. You might be surprised by how much money you can actually save by doing this.

  1. Get a city pass

There are different theories about the most cost-effective way to travel around when you are abroad. The Secret Traveller blog by 1Cover advises how to avoid driving disasters on holiday, to ensure you have an inexpensive car hire experience. While it is cost effective to hire a car, it can also work out inexpensive to buy a city pass that covers the cost of all public transport on a single card. It is often the cheapest and most hassle-free way of getting around efficiently.
